Firefighter Women's Health

What The Research Actually Shows

A 2023 study published in Frontiers in Public Health found that female firefighters are being diagnosed with cancer at an average age of 39. For breast cancer in the general population, the median age of diagnosis is 62. Women in the fire service are not just facing elevated cancer risk. They are facing it more than two decades earlier than their peers outside the service.

A 2024 systematic review published in Toxics identified twelve chemicals found at elevated levels in firefighting environments that are linked to breast cancer risk. Benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PFAS, and flame retardants all made the list. Many of these exposures occur through skin absorption and off-gassing from gear, meaning they happen even when protective equipment is worn.

The top cancers reported among female firefighters include breast, cervical, melanoma, uterine, and ovarian. Several of these, including ovarian cancer, are rarely covered under firefighter cancer presumption laws, leaving women without compensation or recognition for illnesses directly tied to the job.

This is what shows up in the body. Cycles that change without explanation. Fatigue even after days off. Mood and energy that do not match the woman you used to be. Symptoms most providers dismiss as stress or aging, when the data shows they are the documented response to the career itself.

Filling In The Gap

Most of what the medical community knows about firefighter health comes from studies built around men. Women were excluded from the majority of that research because the numbers were small. The result is a medical system that is treating female firefighters with frameworks that were never designed for their bodies.

FIREPROOF does not treat the women in this profession as an afterthought. The program was built with the explicit understanding that female firefighters carry the same toxic burden as their male counterparts, face additional hormonal vulnerabilities that men do not experience, and most women have been left to figure all of it out without the clinical guidance that should have existed decades ago.

Our clinical team treats hormones as a system across every stage of life. Not symptoms in isolation. A complete picture of what your body is doing across active duty, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause, and a clinical plan built around it.

That framework is the Lifecycle Hormone Protocol.

The Lifecycle Hormone Protocol (LHP) is a clinical program built specifically for women in the fire service. Comprehensive panels that go beyond standard hormone testing. A plan that adjusts as your body moves through every stage of life. Care that treats the entire system, not the symptom.

The data gap does not mean the risk is absent. It means women in the fire service have been left out of the conversation.

FIREPROOF was built to change that.

What We Offer

Tier 1

FIREPROOF Wellness

The FIREPROOF Method Course — $279 Lifetime Access

A self-paced, research-backed education platform built specifically for the firefighter lifestyle. Every module is taught with a direct understanding of shift schedules, physical demands, and the real-world limitations of this career. This is not generic women's wellness content repackaged with a fire truck on the cover. Every strategy, every recommendation, and every lesson was built around the specific health risks female firefighters face and the specific constraints they operate within.

Module Topics

Hormones

Why your hormones are changing and what actually restores balance.

What is happening to your hormones and why. How shift work, toxic exposures, sleep disruption, and occupational stress drive hormonal imbalance across every stage of a woman's life, what the research says about the timeline, and what you can do to support and restore balance without defaulting to interventions that mask the root cause.

Nutrition

Eating for a fire service career, not a desk job.

Eating for a fire service career is not the same as eating for the general population. This module covers nutrition strategies built around shift patterns, station cooking, and limited prep time, plus the metabolic demands of a job that alternates between sedentary hours and high-intensity operations without warning, and how to eat around a call instead of after one.

On-Shift Recovery

Reduce the damage in real time.

Most of the damage happens during the shift itself. This module covers the strategies that reduce that damage in real time, including what to do during long calls, extended operations, and the physiological recovery window immediately following a fire, plus how to manage inflammation and cortisol spikes before they compound into risk you carry for the rest of your career.

Off-Shift Recovery

Life between shifts.

What you do between shifts determines how much damage accumulates over a career. Sleep architecture for shift workers, circadian rhythm management, and the specific recovery protocols that separate firefighters who hold up over a 25-year career from those who don't, plus how to prioritize the time you have between calls and shifts.

Mental Health

The fire service talks about it.

The fire service talks about mental health more than it used to, but rarely ties it to physical health outcomes. This module covers the psychological toll of the career, tools for managing traumatic exposure, strategies for staying regulated on and off shift, and how mental health connects directly to hormone balance and cardiovascular risk over time.

Fitness

Train for a 25-year career.

Building and maintaining functional strength and stamina across a fire service career, with training approaches that account for irregular schedules, shift fatigue, and the physical demands of the job itself. This module covers how to train around calls instead of skipping sessions, and how to build capacity that holds up over decades, not just months.

Tier 2

The FIREPROOF Method + Telemedicine — $1,804 One time or 4 monthly payments of $451

Everything in the course, plus direct clinical access to providers trained specifically in firefighter health. This is where the education becomes a clinical plan built around your actual body.

Most female firefighters have had blood drawn at some point and been told everything looks normal. FIREPROOF goes deeper. We order over 90 targeted biomarkers chosen specifically for the risks firefighters face, including comprehensive female hormone panels, advanced lipid profiles, inflammatory markers, cortisol, thyroid function, metabolic markers, and more. What makes those labs meaningful is what happens next.

Your provider does not hand you a printout and send you on your way. They sit with the data, connect the patterns, and build a personalized clinical plan based on what your body is actually showing. Every result is explained in plain language. Every recommendation is grounded in where your numbers are today and where they need to be. Every step forward is guided by a provider who understands the career you are working and the toll it takes on a woman's body specifically.

For female firefighters at any stage of life, that guidance follows our Lifecycle Hormone Protocol, which treats hormones as a system across active duty, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause rather than addressing symptoms in isolation.

What is included:

  • The complete FIREPROOF Method educational content with all modules and lifetime access
  • Five telemedicine visits with licensed providers trained in firefighter health
  • Provider ordering of a comprehensive lab panel covering over 90 targeted biomarkers- actual lab costs not included. Bill to your PPO plan or take advantage of our cash-pay discount
  • Optional ordering of DUTCH Advanced Hormone Testing
  • Personalized clinical plan built around your results and your career
  • Lifecycle Hormone Protocol
  • Prescription care when clinically indicated
  • Supplement discounts through Fullscript

PFAS Exposure Testing

A blood panel measuring levels of PFAS compounds linked to negative health outcomes in people with high occupational exposure. Results are compared against CDC averages and evaluated against risk thresholds set by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. For firefighters who have worked with AFFF foam and contaminated gear, this is not theoretical. It is documented exposure, and now it can be measured.

Galleri Multi-Cancer Screen

A single blood draw that screens for signals associated with more than 50 types of cancer, including many with no other recommended screening test available. Pancreatic, ovarian, liver, esophageal. The cancers that are hardest to catch and most lethal when caught late. For firefighters, whose cancer incidence outpaces the general population across multiple sites, this is proactive clinical care at the highest level currently available.

NutrEval Panel

An advanced assessment of nutrient status, toxin burden, and mitochondrial function that goes well beyond a standard metabolic panel. This test identifies specific deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, and functional gaps that directly affect energy, recovery, hormonal health, and long-term resilience. It provides a level of clinical detail that changes the specificity of the plan your provider can build for you, tailored to the demands of firefighting.

Your health impacts your crew, your family, and your future.

Protect your health with the same dedication you bring to the fireground.
